Replacing a roof is a long-term decision for the home. Alongside renewing its protection, it offers an opportunity to consider architectural appearance and electricity generation together.
Article 11 in the VOLTECTA series outlines decisions for a renovation project. Suitability for solar tiles starts with assessing the existing building and defining the scope.
Assess solar before choosing the covering
The U.S. Department of Energy identifies roof replacement as a useful time to consider solar. With integrated solar tiles, the decision also concerns the roof covering, so investigate before ordering materials.
Compare alternatives against the same scope: areas renewed or retained, roof layers, accessories and electrical equipment. A product name alone does not describe a complete roof system.

Begin with an existing-roof survey
Collect drawings, photographs and records of leaks or repairs. Ask the project team to assess the substrate, supports, insulation, waterproofing, junctions and drainage. A structural engineer should review the relevant structural aspects against the proposed system.
A sound-looking surface does not establish the condition of concealed layers. Agree how discoveries after removal will be handled, who approves changes and how the design will be updated before work continues.
Develop a practical layout
Request a plan showing active areas, complementary covering, openings, chimneys, equipment and service space. Orientation, pitch and shading inform feasibility; total roof area alone cannot establish energy yield.
If solar equipment is already installed, plan its treatment separately and assess component compatibility. Do not assume that an existing inverter, connectors or wiring will suit the new tiles.
Agree the work sequence before removal
For an occupied home, establish when roof areas will be opened, how the building will be protected and how roofers and electrical specialists will coordinate. Ask for a programme addressing weather and site access.
Resolve junctions and complementary components and check availability. Ridges, edges, valleys and service penetrations should be defined in the drawings and specification before installation.
Define inspections and handover
Agree roof and electrical inspections, installation records, as-built drawings, maintenance instructions and service contacts. Responsibilities for the covering, waterproofing and energy system should be clear in writing.
Solar generation does not by itself provide power during an outage. If storage or backup matters, have it explicitly designed and specified as part of the solution.
What to send for a suitability review
Share the property location, roof photographs, available dimensions or plans and the reason for replacement with VOLTECTA. Include occupancy, existing solar equipment and the planned renovation date.
This enables a focused initial discussion and identifies missing information. The aim is coordinated roof and energy renewal, with a defined scope before the old covering is removed.
