A new home offers the opportunity to assess solar roofing while the roof shape, openings and services are still being developed. It is the time to connect appearance with roofing and electrical performance.

Article ten in the VOLTECTA series suggests a coordination sequence for homeowners and architects, not a yield guarantee or substitute for project-specific design.

Start with the brief and architecture

Define priorities for roof shape, colour, architectural integration and energy use. Mention storage, backup or EV charging interests without assuming they are included with the tiles.

Ask the architect to include a solar feasibility review before finalising roof geometry. The aim is to understand alternatives, not to make every architectural choice serve generation alone.

Assess usable area, openings and shade

The U.S. Department of Energy’s homebuilder guidance discusses site assessment and planning for solar integration. Ask the project team to examine orientation, pitches and expected shading.

Show active tiles, infill, roof windows, chimneys, equipment and service areas on one plan. Total roof area is not necessarily generating area. Request a layout and yield estimate with stated assumptions.

Bring the designers to the same plan

IEA PVPS’s BIPV guidebook connects architectural integration with performance, safety and operation. We recommend a coordination meeting involving the architect, structural engineer, electrical designer and roofing and solar specialists.

Establish who coordinates the work, supplies details and approves changes. Cover supports, fixings, roof layers, waterproofing, drainage, cable routes and equipment locations. Everyone should use the same drawing revision.

Allow for equipment and maintenance

Ask the electrical designer to define routes and suitable equipment locations against the actual models and requirements. For future storage, distinguish included preparations from equipment still needed later.

Storage preparation is not a battery installation; a battery alone is not a commitment to whole-home backup. Specify intended backup loads separately and request assessment of a suitable system. Include safe inspection and replacement access.

Three decision points before construction

At concept stage, agree an architectural direction and initial feasibility. At detailed design, settle the model, layout, roof details and services coordination. Before ordering and construction, confirm that specifications and drawings agree and responsibilities are clear.

Do not leave accessory selection or junction details to installation day. Agree project approvals, inspections and handover with the relevant professionals.

What to share with VOLTECTA now

Even at an early stage, share a sketch or roof plan, site location and project stage. Include appearance preferences and any fixed openings or equipment.

Start while decisions can still be coordinated. The aim is a roof and energy system designed together, with handover information explaining operation and maintenance.
