Solar tiles form part of a roof assembly. Suitability also depends on the structure, supports and connections below the covering.

Article nine in the VOLTECTA series outlines a discussion with the structural engineer. It is not a structural calculation or installation approval and provides no support spacing, fixing sizes or construction dimensions.

Start with the existing condition

For an existing roof, ask the engineer which drawings, measurements and inspections are needed. External appearance alone does not establish the condition of supporting members or concealed connections.

Share information about alterations, damp, repairs and earlier roof replacements. Ask whether drawings match the actual building and whether further investigation is needed. Site inspections require safe access and appropriate professionals.

Compare complete assemblies

Request component weights for active tiles, infill roofing, supports and accessories. For a replacement, distinguish what will be removed from what remains.

A lighter covering does not eliminate the need for engineering assessment. Discuss the complete assembly, support arrangement and relevant loads, including maintenance access. Weight per square metre is an input, not confirmation of roof capacity.

Connections belong in the load path

The U.S. Department of Energy’s PV weather-resilience guidance highlights wind forces and mechanical connections. This is general background, not a fixing specification for a VOLTECTA tile.

Ask the engineer to assess the path from the solar component through its supports to the building structure, using the actual system and site conditions. A component test does not necessarily describe its connection to your building.

What should the supplier provide?

Provide the designer with model identification, dimensions, weights, installation instructions, support and fixing details and relevant test reports. Clarify the assembly and use conditions those documents cover.

Do not substitute accessories, support spacing or connections because another product looks similar. Proposed site changes need the designer’s review and, where appropriate, the system supplier’s input.

Coordinate roofing and electrical details

Review structural drawings alongside tile layouts, openings and service routes. Ask whether support details coordinate with roof layers and maintenance access.

Before construction, request coordinated drawings and clear responsibilities for changes, inspections and concealed-detail records. Do not drill or cut structural members without appropriate professional direction.

Prepare for an initial review

Share roof plans, available sections, location and photographs taken from a safe place. Identify whether this is a new build or replacement and what is known about the supporting structure.

VOLTECTA’s initial suitability review helps gather questions and information; it does not replace the structural engineer’s assessment. The proposed tile and the particular building must be considered together.
